Actuary
The Trustees of the Fund have appointed Mr. Andreas Michael from Keystone Actuarial Solutions as the Fund’s actuary.
The De Beers Pension Fund consists of defined benefit (DB) and a defined contribution (DC) section. In the DB section, most of the benefits are defined in terms of a members service and salary. Members pay a fixed contribution to the Fund (7.5% of pensionable salary) while the Company pays the balance of the cost of the benefits. The Company contribution varies depending on the actual experience of the Fund, i.e. investment returns, pension increases, resignations, deaths, new members, etc. In the DC Section, your benefits are determined by the value in your Fund Credit. Members pay a fixed contribution to the Fund (7.5% of pensionable salary) while the Company also pays a fixed contribution of 14.16% of pensionable salary – hence the name of this section of the Fund is Defined Contribution.
The Fund Actuary assesses the financial condition of the Fund (DB and DC) from time to time (at least every three years) and recommends the rate which the Company should pay in addition to the members’ contribution of 7.5% of salary in order for the Fund to continue to support the benefits as provided in the Fund rules.
Additional duties of the actuary
The Actuary is also involved in advising the Trustees on a wide variety of related matters such as:
- recommendations for benefit improvements and the costs thereof
- annual pension increase recommendations
- individual member calculations
- market trends and how the Fund should respond to these
- changes to the Fund rules
- calculations and advice related to mergers or acquisitions or transfers of individual members to or from other funds
- a broad range of miscellaneous queries
